Honorable Ron Oden Former Mayor Ron Oden will be honored at the Blatino Oasis White Party Welcome on Friday, May 13, 2011 at 6pm. A Detroit native and longtime civic leader, ordained minister, former candidate for Congress, father and grandfather– Ron Oden is one of the leading gay political figures in California and nationwide.  Oden made history in November 2003, when Palm Springs voters elected him as Mayor, making him California's first ever out gay African American Mayor and only the second out black gay Mayor in the United States, behind Commonwealth of Massachusetts Mayor, Kenneth Reeves.  In 2004, Mayor Oden told The Advocate that his decision to come out was prompted by a tear-gas bomb explosion at a gay pride event in San Diego that he attended.
